Meet Josh: Helix CMS’ First Apprentice

We’re passionate about creating opportunities for young people to build rewarding careers in construction. We’re proud to welcome Josh, our very first apprentice, who joins us as a Construction Support Technician Apprentice from South Hunsley School

Josh’s journey with Helix is a great example of what happens when talent, initiative, and opportunity align.

From a proactive approach to a clear career path

Beth Bellingham, our Business Development Manager, explains:

“We were initially impressed with Josh’s proactive approach in reaching out to us directly. As a first step we offered CV and skills mentoring, and Josh was responsive and active in taking on board feedback. He quickly improved his CV, showed real maturity in his approach, and we offered him a two-week work experience placement.

During that time, Josh thrived in the environment, got involved with live projects, and supported the commercial team. He was well-prepared at interview, demonstrated genuine interest and knowledge about the industry, and it was clear he had the foundation and mindset for a career in construction.

Although Helix hadn’t previously offered an apprenticeship programme, it was obvious that Josh was the right candidate to help us launch one.”

Josh’s first few weeks at Helix

“My first few weeks have been amazing; I was introduced with a warm welcome by Ross Bellingham which instantly made me feel a part of the team. I’ve been involved in different meetings and tasks with colleagues, which has given me a feel of how each person contributes to a project.

I’ve particularly enjoyed working with Paul Saunders (Senior Quantity Surveyor) as I’m interested in a career in Quantity Surveying. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed the start of my Helix experience and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.”

Why construction?

“One thing that really made me interested in pursuing a career in construction is seeing projects being built – watching how they transform from start to finish. Construction is such a massive field that’s constantly growing, which creates so many opportunities. I want to take those opportunities and become as successful as possible.”

A day in the life of an apprentice at Helix

“My day-to-day involves a mix of technical tasks and site coordination, alongside one day a week of online college. I start by checking emails and responding to instructions from colleagues. I also attend meetings and briefings, taking notes and understanding current site priorities.

My role is all about supporting the project team to run things efficiently while I gain hands-on experience and develop my skills.”

Skills and projects

“I’m excited to develop my technical skills, especially in tools like Microsoft Excel and understanding construction drawings. I also want to grow my soft skills like communication, teamwork, and attention to detail.

Currently, I’m getting involved with projects such as the Humber building at South Hunsley School, Brompton Hall School in Scarborough, and Spire Hospital in Hull – which is a great opportunity to learn and see different types of projects in action.”

Josh’s advice to other young people

“If I could give any advice to the younger generation, I’d say: follow your dreams and give it everything you’ve got – especially if you enjoy learning in a hands-on way.

Apprenticeships are a brilliant way to gain real work experience, earn a wage, and get qualified at the same time. Don’t worry if you don’t know everything at the start. What matters most is your attitude. Be curious, ask questions, and push yourself – that’s what will create your success.”

Outside of work

When he’s not at Helix, Josh can often be found on the football pitch or at the gym.

“I’ve played football from a young age for high standard teams including Hull City, East Riding County and Humberside, and even had the opportunity to trial with Sheffield United. It’s been a big part of my life and taught me commitment and resilience.

I also go to the gym five times a week, which keeps me healthy and gives me confidence – I enjoy seeing hard work pay off.”

A welcome addition

Josh’s journey reflects what we value most at Helix: ambition, collaboration, and a willingness to learn. We’re proud to have launched our apprenticeship programme with such a strong candidate and look forward to supporting Josh’s career as he grows with us.

Welcome to the team, Josh!
