Welcome back, Sophie: strengthening compliance at Helix

After some well-deserved time away on maternity leave, we’re thrilled to welcome Sophie back to the Helix team – this time in a brand-new role as our Compliance Manager.

It’s been wonderful to see Sophie’s friendly face around the office again. “It feels good to be back,” she says. “Everyone has been so warm and welcoming – it’s lovely to see the team again and start settling into the new normal.”

A new chapter: from Project Support to Compliance Manager

Many of our extended team and partners will already know Sophie from her previous role in Project Support. A position that gave her valuable insight into how Helix operates both on and off site. Now, in her new role as Compliance Manager, she’s taking that knowledge and applying it across the business.

“I touched on a lot of compliance in my previous role,” Sophie explains, “but now I can really get stuck into company-wide compliance. I’m more office-based now, which gives me the space to focus fully on the systems that keep everything running smoothly.”

What does compliance mean at Helix?

Sophie is responsible for a wide range of crucial areas that underpin how Helix operates as a business, including:

  • HR and onboarding

  • Constructionline and CHAS accreditations

  • ISO 9001 and 14001 compliance

  • Document control and audit readiness

  • Mental health first aid and wellbeing support

Plus, she might be the team’s top tea maker and biscuit provider too!

But behind the scenes, compliance plays a vital role in ensuring projects are delivered safely and consistently. “It helps us set a clear, uniform standard across the business – from toolbox talks to health and safety documentation. Ultimately, it helps keep us all safe and supports our commitment to delivering work we can be proud of.”

Supporting the wider team

One of the first people any new team member will meet at Helix is Sophie – something she values highly. “I support the wider team by always being a point of contact. I help with training, onboarding, systems like PROCORE (more on that, here) and Citation, and general day-to-day support.”

She adds, “I’ve built really good relationships with the site teams. It’s always great to visit and see how everyone’s getting on – it keeps me connected to the work we’re delivering.”

What’s next?

Right now, Sophie is focused on preparing for upcoming audits, working with Phil Jessop on streamlining ISO processes, and creating best-practice frameworks across the business.

One project she’s particularly excited about is the South Hunsley School development – “It’s a special one for me because I went there as a teenager! It’s amazing to see the progress already and know I’m now playing a part in that story.”

Sophie’s also looking forward to more community engagement: “I can’t wait to get involved in volunteering with HEYC – that’s something I’m really passionate about.”

We’re incredibly proud to have Sophie back with us – not just for her attention to detail and knowledge, but for the energy, humour, and support she brings to the team. Welcome back, Sophie!
